I like growth. I feel like most spiller writers do. We write vulnerable personal essays in hopes of figuring out who we are, how we tick, and why we do the things that we do.

Usually, when I come to the blank page, I’m reflecting on the past, working through something that’s already transpired, and trying to make it make sense. But today isn’t one of my normal writing days. Today, I’m writing before my story has even taken place. So how do I know a story is coming? Because I recently made the decision to jump off the ledge of personal change.

Personal change can range from small choices, like saying an affirmation in the mirror every morning, to the gargantuan, like working with a professional to heal trauma. In this essay, I’m focusing on the bigger changes. If you’ve ever made a choice to grow that scared you a little, required a big investment — emotional, financial, physical, or otherwise — or was high stakes, you know that big changes challenge your reality and require you to grow as a person. They aren’t composed of one clear instance where change occurred, but are more personal journeys through the sea of change. I like to call these “change journeys.”
